for everyone

Next week I'll be going to Beijing (China) for our international educational tour.. On one side I'm excited because I'll be meeting up with a new culture, which I'm totally in for! Trying new food, drinks, and broadening my global knowledge and all that..  But on the other hand, I'll feel pulled back since we have to stick together as a group. Meaning that I can't go wandering on my own and explore the different sites and places! Well, I hope it will be interesting and fun after all...

You guys got any suggestions or comments for me to take note of before I leave the Philippines?

Blog EntryDoes God Allow Evil in This World?Aug 4, '08 8:37 PM
for everyone

"Does God allow evil in this world?" This was a question assigned to us in our religion class. As I was researching through brochures and some books talking about the scriptures, I got interested in the topic, and decided to share with you my answer...

Yes, because God is patient with us all and does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain repentance. The fact that God has allowed this sinful world full of sufferings to exist until now has afforded us the opportunity to be alive and learn his ways, to make needed changes in our lives. It is not God that causes suffering, but it is the humans who are to blame. In other words, He is letting us see for ourselves the answer to the question of whether humans could successfully rule themselves without His help. He has let people experiment if men can be successful in governing themselves without God’s guidance. This issue of whether people can govern themselves or not, was started with Adam and Eve. God created them perfect. If they would have obeyed Him, they would never have gotten sick or died. But they chose to go their own way, to set their own standards of good and bad, and thus they turned away from God, the Life-Giver. So now, we are all born in sin, and the sufferings and evil are the results of humans trying to rule themselves apart from God. Men have tried every type of government already, yet none can satisfy everyone involved in it. Men have set foot on the moon, yet we cannot live in peace on Earth. The Bible shows that God has set a time to destroy this wicked system and will do soon.

“Is it not true that a loving parent may allow a child to undergo a painful operation because of beneficial results that can come from it?

Also, is it not true that “quick solutions” to painful ailments are often only superficial?

More time is frequently needed in order to eliminate the cause.”

Blog EntryWhy did this happen..Jul 26, '08 11:40 PM
for everyone

My very first best friend from kinder up to high school, I had lost closeness with her because we went to different schools, and had different friends..

We used to have sleepovers all the time and watched movies together. We used to imagine we were living in our own secret world and went on adventures where we would meet imaginary villains and we defeated them with our magical powers... these battles usually took place in our backyards...

Our bond was strong, and we'd be best friends forever... But with getting older we drifted away from each other, and then i left for the Philippines.

For the past 3 years we still emailed each other a few times. Maybe 4 or 5 times... Now, this morning I saw she left a message in my netlog's guest book. Ofcourse i was curious to see what she had to share with me..

As i was reading, my heart stopped beating. I didn't know how to react. Should i be happy for her because she seemed to be so; or should i be sad. One thing is for sure, I bursted into tears..

She asked how I was doing, and told me she was going to have a baby 3 weeks from now. I just can't believe that the little girl I used to know, who's now only 16, is going to give birth and yet i never could have seen it coming.

Somehow I want to blame myself because I'm not there to support her, and I have pretty much abonded our friendship. Gosh maybe I could have prevented her from being in the situation she is in if only I was there with her before

I just hope she's truly happy, and stays strong in everything she may meet up with.. If you really are glad, then I want to congratulate you..

Girl, I'm sorry we didn't stay close.. Just know that I love you no matter what.

for everyone

I’m usually a quiet person by nature, especially now that I’m here in the Philippines; the language has been a barrier for me to talk with Filipinos. (ouch??!)

Many will comment: “nosebleed, nosebleed!” well, ..LALO NA AKO! Diba, diba?

Referring to all my classmates, and everyone else I know here in the Phils., you guys are the dominant group; I’m just one. With that I mean, I’m the only DUTCH-speaking gal. So yeah, I had hard times adjusting to the English language as well at first.

NOW, look, …When you think it is difficult for you to approach me.. Think of how much harder it actually is for me… But I try not to let that hold me back from socializing with others. I am who I am, and I can’t change where I was born and where I grew up. And hell no, I’m not gonna feel ashamed just because I’m different.

I want you all to know that ..I don’t bite!! I wanna get to know you people. I mean no harm ;)

I just wish you’d do the same, and not be afraid to talk to me about anything, everything! (that is, only if you want to alright)…And don’t you ignore me, just because I’m an “alien”.

=D

*phew!* There, I’ve said it.

Blog EntryIt isn't just about global warming...Jul 6, '08 2:54 AM
for everyone

It is loud and clear that our planet is suffering and everything on it. This is because of how we live; what we do, or let’s say, what we didn’t do. Now why in the world did I say “what we didn’t do?” What we didn’t do is actually stop everything we’ve ever started and created; we keep on building new things instead of slowing things down. We have put our minds on that what we need is what we design, create, and the like. We’re mainly shaped by our environment.

Yes, of course I enjoy my cell phone, computer and all the other kinds of technology, and I’m pretty sure you do to. I don’t mean to say that technology has to be destroyed; I suggest that we preserve the things we use, and find solutions, and wait, not just FIND, but make USE of those solutions that would help the environment a lot. And available solutions there are indeed, ..so what’s the problem?

I can say this for sure, it may be difficult for us to make use of those environmental-friendly-devices, because not all of us realize the consequences of global warming. We don’t take it seriously, or simply because not all communities are being introduced or encouraged to make use of those devices or they are not available to us. I honestly blame primarily the government for that. BUT, okay okay wait, not only them, .. Because it is EVERYONE. People are driven by greed; we worry too much about our status and prestige, and we are not living anymore; we’re just breathing.

Maybe you’re laughing right now on what I’m writing; in that case you better go have a mental check-up, because this isn’t any funny business.

Can we really stop global warming? This isn’t just about the global warming. . .

As long as we stay driven by money,

As long as we maintain the same attitudes,

As long as we hold an idle mind,

..Nothing will change.

This is about us, human beings.

We are the cause of destruction.

To save this world, we are ALL gonna have to work on it TOGETHER.

…Peace out!...

Blog EntrySearch For TruthJul 6, '08 1:31 AM
for everyone

To say that one certain religion is THE true one,

is asking for trouble from the very start.

The words of many have been transformed as time goes by, as they were passed on through generations. We can prove this by just playing this simple game called "pass the message". Gather around with ten people and line up, and as the one in front of the line passes on a message to the next in line, you will notice that the content of the message may have changed as it got to the last person. See where I’m going?

I just want to clarify that what we read, articles or stories written hundreds or thousands of years ago, may not be stated now as it was at the time it was originally written or told.

A mistake made by many of us is that we agree on things, simply because, well hey, everyone else agrees on it! That way we’re not going to get any nearer to what many among us want; the truth. I don’t mean to say that you have to disagree and argue about every statement you hear in life, but I want to let you know that you can look for yourself what you want to believe. If you don’t agree with something, research on it. If you have something to share, let your voice be heard. Keep searching for truth! You have that freedom. You are free in life as long as you commit no evil.

I believe in God. I believe in his son; Jesus Christ. And I believe there’s truth in every belief, but that should not allow us to be ignorant and blind to things said that are contrary or different to what we learn. Look at our world; do you think it is on its best? Don't take in just like that, whatever a person presents to you. You have a mind of your own. It is not bad being different.

Blog EntryThe Fine Art of Flirting..May 10, '08 6:55 AM
for everyone

--Another article that caught my eye..

The Fine Art of Flirting

Everyone knows that you like him ... your best friend, your next-door neighbor, the cutie who works at the pizza place. Everyone knows that you have a crush on the shy senior with the tortoiseshell glasses ... everyone but him, that is! Although you may feel like your emotions are stamped on your forehead in flashing neon — "I LIKE YOU, YOU IDIOT!" — sometimes it takes a little flirting to get someone's attention.

Flirting Is ...

So what exactly is flirting? We're not talking about flirting as in playing dumb. Or dropping your books so that special someone can pick them up, catch your gaze, and fall hopelessly in love. That only works in bad teen movies! Instead, think of flirting as a subtle use of body language and other cues that simply let another person know, "I'm interested if you are!" When there is attraction between two people, you may flirt without even realizing it. Some examples of flirting are

  • making eye contact and smiling

  • leaning in closer when someone is talking

  • giving someone a compliment

If I'm feeling really brave, I may even causally touch someone when we're talking. I'll laugh and touch his knee or his shoulder for emphasis.
— Nina, 16 years old

Maybe you're not so brazen and you'd rather play it cool? Like when the hottie who never said two words to you in your lifetime out of nowhere mumbles, "Hey," as she walks by? Or have you ever felt someone staring at you, but when you looked up, the person practically gave herself whiplash trying to look somewhere else? That's definitely flirting ... but how 'bout taking it up a notch? A great way to flirt is to express some interest. As in, "Didn't I see you at the mall yesterday?" or "What did you think of that test?"

Sometimes to get someone's attention we may show off a little. Like when there's a mad rush to shoot baskets every time that cutie from homeroom walks in the gym.

Whenever Ariel walked her dog by the skate park, I tried to get her attention by catching some air. It would probably be easier just to talk to her instead of trying not to break my neck in front of her.
— Jake, 14 years old

Flirting Isn't ...

One thing is for sure, if you show some skin, you'll get some attention! But you want someone to get to know you, not your body. So, don't bare it all just to get some glances.

Also, flirting is not hooking up, although it could sometimes lead to that. And remember — flirting is never an open invitation for sex. If someone is trying to give you the eye, it doesn't necessarily mean she or he wants to sleep with you and in turn, just because you flirt with someone, doesn't mean you owe her or him anything.

When All Else Fails ...

So, you flirted your heart out and still aren't getting vibes from that special someone? You have two choices. You can muster up the courage to ask that person out, and possibly risk rejection, or move on, Romeo! Either way, you are that much closer to mastering the fine art of flirting.

Good luck!

Blog EntryJealousy. This is why..May 10, '08 6:27 AM
for everyone

Just Jealous?

Imagine this ... you and your sig other are walking in the mall and this hottie strolls by and catches your eye. You hardly even look up, but before you can say half-price sale, your girlfriend is giving you the business. "Did I just catch you looking at her? You think she's hot, don't you?"

Sound familiar?

Or how about the last guy you were dating, the one who bought you a pager so he could know where you were all of the time? You thought it was sweet that he wanted to know your every move. He was just a little jealous. There's nothing wrong with that ... right?

Wrong! They don't call jealousy the green-eyed monster for nothing! Jealousy can be destructive to a relationship. We're not talking about being jealous of your best friend's new relationship, or jealous that someone else got picked to start in the game instead of you. "Everyone has feelings of jealousy sometimes," says 16-year-old Eric. "Sometimes I'm jealous of people who get better grades, or who drive nicer cars." But jealousy in an intimate relationship is a whole different story!

..."People get jealous when they

are uncomfortable with who they are."...

Why Be Jealous?

Why do people get jealous in the first place? According to therapist Julie Duhigg, jealousy is often rooted in insecurity. "People get jealous when they are uncomfortable with who they are," she explains. "When you are not secure with yourself, anything seems threatening, like outside friendships or even crushes on celebrities." So, if you're worried that your girlfriend is about to run off with Brad Pitt (who, last time we checked, was happily married), you may want to work on that self-esteem!

Jealousy Isn't Cute!

Some people think that jealousy is a sign of affection and love. But you should think again if your partner doesn't trust you to do things by yourself or to spend time with your friends. When someone starts tracking your every move and is in your face all the time about where you've been and whom you've been with, then it's time to rethink whether this is a healthy relationship.

"Possessiveness and controlling behavior are serious red flags that you are probably in a relationship that could turn dangerous," Duhigg notes. Some warning signs could include

  • Your partner wants to know where you are and whom you are with all of the time.

  • Your partner makes you feel guilty for spending time with family or friends.

  • Your partner thinks that innocent conversation equals flirting and gets angry about it.

On the flipside, if your sweetie doesn't get jealous when you talk to other people, or when you hang posters of hot celebs on your wall, it doesn't have to mean that she or he doesn't think or care about you! It may simply mean that your relationship is built on trust and respect.

Talk It Out

What if you think that you have reason to be jealous? Like, maybe you saw your honey cozying up to some cutie, and you felt a little knot in your stomach? That's normal. We take it for granted, even if we don't talk about it, that our serious, intimate relationships will be exclusive — not shared. But before you let feelings of jealousy take over, talk about it! "Don't take your feelings of insecurity out on someone else by being crazy jealous," says Maya, 17. "Tell your boyfriend or girlfriend that you feel uncomfortable with the situation." Maya is right. Chances are, if there is good communication in your relationship, you can work it out and keep that green-eyed monster far away!

Blog EntrySo,..who was Cleopatra anyway?Apr 6, '08 9:09 AM
for everyone

Cleopatra lived from 69-30 B.C.E. She took the throne at age 18.
Though Cleopatra was a queen of Egypt, her family heritage was Macedonian Greek.
Cleopatra was descended from a line of rulers that began with Ptolemy I, a general who served under Alexander the Great in the 4th century B.C.E.
During her reign, the Roman Empire threatened Egypt with conquest. Her alliances with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony helped keep Egypt independent for 20 years.
Cleopatra’s reign ended with her suicide after she and Antony were defeated by Octavian, Caesar’s heir, at the Battle of Actium.

Who was Cleopatra?

What do you know about Cleopatra?
Over time, people have seen Cleopatra as a ravishing beauty...a greedy power-monger...a goddess...a queen...a courageous leader...a seducer and destroyer of great men. Which of these portrayals is true?

Think about what you've heard about Cleopatra. Did your information come from classes? From books? Or did you glean it from popular culture?

Look at the following questions to find out if what you thought you knew about Cleopatra is really true.

. . . .

Was she beautiful?

You decide. This coin dates from the reign of Cleopatra. It may be a good likeness, since it was an official portrait.

In the exhibition, you

ll see how painters, playwrights, poets, sculptors, and moviemakers have created their own images of Cleopatrafrom ancient times, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, to modern-day Hollywood.

Their visions vary and have helped build a myth of her beauty. Perhaps she was beautiful, but her power and charisma also enhanced how people saw her.

Was she buried in a pyramid?

No. Cleopatra lived long after the age of the pyramids. They date from about 2650-1700 B.C.E. The period when Cleopatra lived—the first century B.C.E.—is closer to our time than to the time of the Pyramid of Menkaure, shown here.

In fact, we don’t know where Cleopatra was buried. We do know that she committed suicide after Egypt was conquered by Rome, and she was reportedly buried in Egypt with her Roman husband and political ally, Mark Antony.

To learn more about pyramids, tombs, and burial customs in ancient Egypt, visit The Field Museum’s permanent exhibition, Inside Ancient Egypt

. There, you can climb to the roof of a stone tomb, see mummies, and find out how mummies were made.

Was she a goddess?

Cleopatra was Egypt’s last pharaoh, and pharaohs were believed by the people to be gods and goddesses. Cleopatra used this status to increase her power and control, promoting herself as Isis, the mother goddess of ancient Egypt. This statue of Isis and her son Horus is displayed in The Field Museum’s Inside Ancient Egypt

exhibition.

Cleopatra imitated other goddesses as well. According to legend, when she traveled to Tarsus to meet and woo Mark Antony, she dressed as Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love.

Where did she live?

Cleopatra reigned over Egypt from her capital city, Alexandria, a cosmopolitan center of culture and learning. This wealthy harbor city on the Mediterranean is still remembered for its library and its lighthouse, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

But for two years during her reign, Cleopatra lived in Rome. Why? A romantic liaison with Julius Caesar led her there, in pursuit of power and continued independence for Egypt.

What language did she speak?

Cleopatra spoke several languages, but her first language was Greek. Scholars have found her handwriting in Greek on a royal decree. With the words "Make it happen", she granted tax-exempt status to a Roman general who was Mark Antony's right-hand man. In the exhibition, you can learn more about her Greek heritage and family background.

Cleopatra also spoke Egyptian, which you might expect, since she was the queen of Egypt. But surprisingly, historians think that she was the first ruler in her family to do so. The Egyptian hieroglyphs pictured here are from a dedication to a sacred bull.

Was she related to King Tut?

Was she rich?

Beyond imagining. As pharaoh, she owned all of Egypt—its people, its land, and its material goods. She received a share of all crops, products, and trade—and she could order the creation of anything she desired. When Cleopatra’s Egypt was conquered by Rome in 30 B.C.E., its riches were plundered and taken back to Italy. Her fortune was so great, the influx caused an instant drop in Rome’s interest rate, from twelve to four percent.

Did she really die from the bite of a snake?

It depends on whom you believe. According to legend, she asked that a snake be brought to her in a basket of figs. The snake’s deadly bite killed not only Cleopatra, but also her two handmaidens.

But death by snakebite would have been a painful way to go. Since Egyptians were skilled in concocting potions and medicines, it’s possible that she poisoned herself. We’ll never know which account is true, but at the exhibition, you can learn what drove Cleopatra to take her own life.

Was she a seductress?

The spicy scene shown on this fan certainly gives you that impression. Cleopatra did have romantic relationships with two of ancient history’s most powerful men—first, Julius Caesar, and several years after Caesar’s death, Mark Antony. In both of these complex relationships, she sought to join forces with the ruler of Rome to assure a place for Egypt in the shaping of the empire.

Since her death, Cleopatra has been described in conflicting ways—charming, greedy, a political equal to the Roman rulers, and a woman faithful in love. In the exhibition, you can explore the motivations of enemies and admirers who told her story, and decide for yourself.

How did she get to become so famous?

She started out famous—as queen of a wealthy nation at a pivotal time in ancient history—and her fame grew from there. During her reign, Cleopatra promoted herself relentlessly, making public displays of her power, her image as pharaoh and goddess, and her links with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.

After she died, Cleopatra's Roman enemy Octavian spread tales about her, unintentionally spinning her story into a legend. The legend grew through the writings of Plutarch, Chaucer, and Shakespeare, and through the many film versions of her story.

Blog EntryUnderwater Structures at YonaguniApr 2, '08 7:39 AM

As I made a thesis concerning the pyramids worldwide, I included the underwater structures found in Japan... Hope you find it interesting..☺
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the waters of Okinawa, Japan, was one of the greatest discoveries in the history of archaeology made. There, spreads over an amazing 311 miles on the ocean floor, the well-preserved remains of an ancient city, or at the very least, a number of closely related sites. Wouldn’t a big finding like that hit every headline in the world? It did lead the headlines of Japan for more than a year, yet, not a word about the Okinawa discovery reached the US public, until the magazine, “Ancient American” broke the news. Since that scoop, only the CNN network televised a report about Japan’s underwater city. Nothing about it has been mentioned in any of the nation’s other archaeology publications, not even in any of our daily newspapers.
A structure thought to be the world's oldest building, nearly twice the age of the great pyramids of Egypt, has been discovered in the Okinawa waters. The rectangular stone ziggurat under the sea off the coast of Japan could be the first evidence of a previously unknown Stone Age civilization, say archeologists. The monument is 600ft wide and 90ft high and has been dated to at least 8000BC. The oldest pyramid in Egypt, the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, was constructed more than 5,000 years later.
The structure off Yonaguni, a small island southwest of Okinawa, was first discovered 75ft underwater by scuba divers 10 years ago and locals believed it was a natural phenomenon. A geologist, Professor Masaki Kimura, was the first scientist to investigate the site and has concluded that the mysterious five-layer structure was man-made. “The object has not been manufactured by nature. If that had been the case, one would expect debris from erosion to have collected around the site, but there are no rock fragments there," he said.

The discovery of what appears to be a road surrounding the building was further evidence that the structure was made by humans, he added. Jim Mower, an archeologist at University College London, said: "If it is confirmed that the site is as old as 10,000 years and is man-made, then this is going to change an awful lot of the previous thinking on Southeast Asian history. It would put the people who made the monument on a par with the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.” This is an expedition still in process and no doubt we will be hearing a lot more of it.
